Charity and Google team up for inspirational careers videos

Google has linked up with the charity Inspiring Girls to produce an online video series aimed at encouraging girls to pursue their dream careers.

The videos, which are available via the Inspiring Girls Youtube channel, features female Google employees talking about their careers in the tech sector.

The charity is particularly keen to encourage girls to take up tech roles, due to the gender gap in the sector. Women currently make up just 20% of the global tech workforce.  In addition, a Girlguiding survey from 2017 found that seven to 21 year old girls and women say gender stereotypes affect their ability to say what they think.

Each two to five minute long video aims to inspire girls around the world, with the charity working in 45 locations in 13 countries, including Mexico, Singapore, Brazil and across Europe.

Wider campaign to launch in the Autumn

This is part of a wider initiative by Inspiring Girls to ask women in a wide range of roles to submit a video to inspire girls to pursue their goals. This will officially launch in the autumn.

“A lack of access to diverse female role models affects girls all around the world, particularly when it comes to their career aspirations,” said Miriam González, Inspiring Girls Founder and Chair.

“We have partnered with Google to break down gender clichés in the tech-sector, and encourage girls to explore some of the careers that women are still under-represented in. We are delighted to have Google collaborating with Inspiring Girls on our global campaign. Together, we can inspire the next generation of women.”

Katerina Havrlant, Marking Director of Google’s training and career development arm Grow with Google added: “Jobs in technology are among the fastest growing and yet, for too many people a career in technology  seems out of reach.

“We’re committed to creating a more inclusive workforce and it’s our role to engage with aspiring technologists early, often–ensuring that anyone can see themselves in tech and can make that future a reality.”
